Robe à l'Anglaise

Currently in the possession of the Victoria and Albert Museum is this wonderful robe à l'Anglaise. The dress was sewn in the 1740's and is made of a certain type of heavy red silk called gros de tours; this was not pure silk but was heavier and warmer.
A fichu covers the collar-bones but is in a heavier material than usually used for this particular piece of clothing.
