The King's Passage

To the everyday courtier this was a part of the château that they would never see - not even if they lived their entire life at court. The King's Passage was - as the name suggests - only for the King's use and would lead directly to the Queen's apartments. The passage was made in 1775 for Louis XVI so that he could visit Marie Antoinette without the courtiers' noticing. Had it not been for this passage Marie Antoinette would not have been able to escape on the night when the mob broke into Versailles. The passage is reached through a staircase.
