The House of Talleyrand-Périgord

Originating in Périgord, this family eventually spread into several branches, each led by a titled nobleman. These were the branches of the Prince de Chalais, of the Comte de Grignols, of the Duc de Périgord, the Duc de Talleyrand and the Comte de de Talleyrand-Périgord. Besides these there was an illegitimate line that descended from the Prince de Talleyrand.

The Branch of the Prince de Chalais

1. Daniel de Talleyrand and Jeanne Françoise de Montluc
Daniel de Talleyrand was invested with letters patent from Louis XIII determining that he was entitled to the title of Comte de Grignols. He was also put in charge of an armed force of 100 men.

The couple had married in 1587 and had four children:

  • Charles de Talleyrand, Prince de Chalais
  • André de Talleyrand, Comte de Gringols - founded the second branch
  • Henri de Talleyrand, Comte de Chalais
  • Léonore de Talleyrand, Baronesse de Saint-Augaire

2. Charles de Talleyrand and Charlotte de Pompadour
Titles: Prince de Chalais, Marquis, d'Excideuil, Comte de Grignols, Baron de Mareuil

The couple had three children:
  • Adrien-Blaise de Talleyrand, Prince de Chalais
  • Pierre de Talleyrand
  • Jean de Talleyrand, Prince de Chalais

3. Adrien-Blaise de Talleyrand and Marie Anne de La Trémoille
Titles: Prince de Chalais, Marquis, d'Excideuil, Comte de Grignols, Baron de Mareuil

Adrien-Blaise participated in a duel with the Marquis de La Frette which caused Adrien-Blaise to be exiled to Spain. He died near Venice and the couple had no children. Consequently, the title went to his younger brother, Jean.

Marie Anne had followed her husband into his exile where she spent her time trying to get him liberated by the Spanish king. She eventually succeeded and the couple went to Venice. After her husband's death, she remarried and became the Duchesse d'Ursins as well as a Grandee of Spain. She was charged by Louis XIV to further French interests at the Spanish court where she resided. However, she fell out of favour with the king and was recalled to France in disgrace.

6. Marie-Françoise de Talleyrand-Périgord and Gabriel Marie de Talleyrand-Périgord

The two were first cousins when they married. When Marie-Françoise was first introduced at court, she caught the eye of Louis XV. He wanted to make her his mistress but she refused to take the position; instead, she voluntarily exiled herself.

Gabriel served in the campaign of 1742-43 in Bavaria where he was promoted to Lieutenant and later to Captain. He continued to serve in the military and participated - amongst others - in the Battle of Fontenoy and the sieges of Tournay and d'Oudenarde.

They had four children:

4. Daniel Marie-Anne de Talleyrand-Périgord and (I) Marie Guyonne de Rochefort de Théobon, (II) Marie Elisabeth de Chamillart de Cany

Daniel served as a musketeer and was eventually granted command of his own regiment by the king. As colonel he laid siege to Philisburg; later he would serve under the Marèchal de Saxe.

Children by Marie Guyonne:

  • Gabriel-Marie de Talleyrand-Périgord, Comte de Périgord and Comte de Gringols
  • Charles-Daniel de Talleyrand-Périgord, Comte de Talleyrand
  • Augustin Louis de Talleyrand-Périgord, Vicomte de Talleyrand
  • Alexandre-Angélique de Talleyrand-Périgord, Archbishop of Paris
  • Louis-Marie de Talleyrand-Périgord, Baron de Talleyrand
  • Marie Elisabeth de Talleyrand-Périgord, Marquise de Curton

5. Gabriel-Marie de Talleyrand-Périgord and Marie-Françoise de de Talleyrand-Périgord

The union between Marie-Françoise and Gabriel-Marie produced a new branch: that of the Duc de Talleyrand.

Interestingly, it was not the eldest son of Charles-Daniel de Talleyrand-Périgord who carried on the title of Duc de Talleyrand but his younger brother, Archambaud. The eldest son assumed the title of Prince de Talleyrand and left only a legitimate line.

The Branch of the Duc de Talleyrand

1. Charles-Daniel de Talleyrand-Périgord and Victoire Éleonore Alexandrine de Damas d'Antigny

Charles-Daniel never held the title of Duc de Talleyrand himself but his son was granted it. Instead, Charles-Daniel was known as the Comte de Talleyrand.

They had three children:

  • Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, Prince de Talleyrand
  • Archambaud de Talleyrand-Périgord, Duc de Talleyrand
  • Boson de Talleyrand-Périgord

2. Archambaud de Talleyrand-Périgord and Madeleine Henriette Sabine Olivier de Senozan de Virville

Archambaud was made lieutenant-general before he inherited the title of Duc de Talleyrand. During the revolution he fled to Berlin where he died in 1808.

They had three children:

  • Louis de Talleyrand-Périgord
  • Françoise Xavière Mélanie Honorine de Talleyrand-Périgord, Duchesse de Mochy
  • Alexandre Edmond de Talleyrand-Périgord, Duc de Talleyrand

3. Alexandre Edmond de Talleyrand-Périgord and Dorothée de Courlande

Alexandre served as Napoleon's Foreign Minister until he resigned; this left him out of favour with the  emperor. Edmond was granted permission to marry Dorothée from the Alexander I of Russia although he himself cared very little about the match.

Dorothée had officially been recognized by Peter von Biron - her mother's husband - although it was widely known that she had been born illegitimately. Like Alexandre, she was not emotionally invested in the marriage. Eventually, she became the mistress of his uncle! The couple would separate in 1816 which was made official in 1824.

They had four children:

  • Napoléon Louis de Talleyrand-Périgord, Duc de Talleyrand
  • Dorothée de Talleyrand-Périgord
  • Alexandre Edmond de Talleyrand-Périgord, Duc de Dino
  • Joséphine Pauline de Talleyrand-Périgord, Marquise de Castellane

The Branch of the Comte de Talleyrand-Périgord

1. Louis-Marie de Talleyrand-Périgord and Louise Fidele Durand de Saint-Eugène-Montigny

Louis was dispatched to Naples where he acted as an ambassador. When Napoleon became emperor, his cousin, Charles-Maurice, ensured that Louis-Marie would gain a position at court.

They had three children:

  • Louis Augustin de Talleyrand-Périgord, Comte de de Talleyrand-Périgord
  • Anatole Marie Jacques de Talleyrand-Périgord, Chevalier
  • Alexandre-Daniel de Talleyrand-Périgord, Baron de Talleyrand-Périgord

Interesting facts and anecdotes:

  • Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord was excommunicated by Pope Pius VI in 1791
  • Marie-Jeanne de Tallyrand, Duchesse de Mailly, was dame d'atours to Marie Antoinette
  • Cardinal Alexandre-Angélique de Talleyrand-Périgord was grand almoner to the exiled Louis XVIII and kept this position during the restoration
  • Henri de Talleyrand-Périgord, Comte de Chalais was executed by Louis XIII for having participated in a failed coup against Cardinal Richelieu. The execution was a disaster - apparently, after twenty strokes with the axe, the Comte was still alive
